FAQ – East Africa Philanthropy Awards

1.       What is the East Africa Philanthropy Awards?

It is an initiative of the East Africa Association of Grantmakers officially launched in September 2011 at the 2nd East Africa Grantmakers Conference in Arusha, Tanzania. The association in an effort to encourage and inspire the culture of local philanthropy by providing the platform for those with unique solutions to social, cultural and economic solutions that are fueled by an inward urge to give back freely to be heard, seen, appreciated and ultimately encouraged to keep on.

2.       What is the East Africa Philanthropy Awards looking for?

The East African Philanthropist Award will be presented to those who serve as an example to others through their material and financial support, as well as their willingness and creativity to tread untried paths. The award will be awarded to individuals and organizations that set a standard of excellence that is an inspiration for others to follow.

3. What are the award categories?

i.                    Corporate philanthropy award – To be presented to a corporate organization with an independent foundation or trust that displays an outstanding commitment to philanthropy not only through its financial support but also by encouraging and motivating others to take leadership roles in philanthropy and community involvement activities. The foundation or trust must be an independent institution with its own endowment fund

ii.                  Community philanthropy/ Community Impact AwardRecognizes private or community foundations or community grantmaking organizations that provide financial support, inspiration, encouragement and motivation to nonprofits and Grantmakers alike – as well as developing innovative approaches to philanthropy.

iii.                Award for individual philanthropy- will be awarded to an individual or family with a record of exceptional generosity who through direct financial support has demonstrated outstanding civic and charitable responsibility, and who encourage others to take philanthropic leadership roles in communities.

 

iv.                 Family Philanthropy Award – The award seeks to recognize a family foundation that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to philanthropy through direct financial support and who encourage others to take philanthropic leadership roles in communities. It is a direct reflection of the philanthropic work across generations within a family.

 

v.                   Faith Based Philanthropy Award – The outstanding Faith based philanthropy will be awarded to a faith based philanthropy that demonstrates outstanding commitment to philanthropy not only through its financial support but also by encouraging and motivating others to take leadership roles in philanthropy and community involvement activities

 

vi.                 Award for youth in philanthropy- Recognizes service by an individual or group of young people below the age of 30 who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the community by pioneering creative ways of addressing development or social issues through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, volunteering, leadership and the cultivation of a young generation of philanthropic leaders. Nominees must be below 30 years old at the time they are nominated.

vii.               Award for Reporting in philanthropy- This award will recognize journalists or media houses that have outstandingly and consistently covered philanthropy work resulting in increased visibility and thereby impacting the energy around and momentum for philanthropic work in the region.

4.          Who can be nominated?

The East African Philanthropist Award will be given to those who serve as an example to others through their material and financial support, as well as their willingness to tread untried paths. These philanthropists move and inspire the East African region ever closer to the renewal of a healthy tradition of giving and philanthropy.

The East Africa philanthropy award will be awarded to individuals and organizations that set a standard of excellence that is an inspiration for others to follow.

5.           How are the nominations done?

Nominators may fill out the online submission form available on our website by clicking here or download the nomination form from our website, fill it in and submit via email to eapa@eaag.org and a copy to info@eaag.org or collect the nomination form from our offices, fill them in and hand deliver them or mail them to our office
